Snapchat starts algorithm-personalized redesign splitting social and media

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel slams social media – and says Snapchat isn't social media

It puts all messages and Stories from friends to the left of the camera, sorted by who you talk to and view most.

A spokesperson explained to me that Snapchat has a team of editors that fact checks each story, so while someone like myself might see these stories as clickbait, at least the content inside is vetted for accuracy.

You know how hashtags work on Twitter, but Instagram has made them popular. The platform recently launched a new "Explore" tab that allows users to look for content based on hastags they've used.

CEO Evan Spiegel took a jab at rivals, writing that social media "fueled "fake news" because of this content mixing. Using algorithms, Snapchat will learn which friends you want to talk to and when you want to talk to them, making it easier to find your top friends and discourage publishers from following users back as an attempt to flood their "friend" list.

Snap Inc. announced the specifics of the redesigned app on Wednesday, the changes came following disappointing third quarter earnings posted earlier this month.

The new app is meant to be more personalized and is intended to more clearly distinguish content from friends and content from media partners, including influencers, whose use of the platform has dropped by 33%, according to a recent study from Mediakix.

BMW unveils new i8 Roadster and Coupe with more electric range
BMW claims that the battery provides up to 53km and 55km of pure electric range for the Roadster and Coupe respectively. However, the Coupe retains hatchback cargo space and rear seats, while the Roadster only offers two seats.

The new Snapchat UI should be rolling out soon, and if you get confused, just remember - friends on the left, everything else on the right.

While a feed-based system is unproved with Snapchat's younger user base, the redesign represents an opportunity for Snap to better target its ads at a time when investors are questioning the business's ability to grow. For Spiegel suggests Snapchat isn't really a social media company, instead it's more of a messaging service, like texting. Before the redesign, all of this appeared in a similar spot in the app, swiping left pulled up stories, swiping left again opened Discover.

"Until now, social media has always mixed photos and videos from your friends with content from publishers and creators", the company said in a blog post.

"While blurring the lines between professional content creators and your friends has been an interesting Internet experiment, it has also produced some unusual side-effects (like fake news) and made us feel like we have to perform for our friends rather than just express ourselves", Snapchat wrote in a blog post.

Now, when you finish watching one Story, Snap will show a brief interstitial screen with the name and a preview of the next friend's Story. "We think this helps guard against fake news and mindless scrambles for friends or unworthy distractions".

The company also reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue of $208 million, which Spiegel attributed at the time to a shift to an automated advertising platform. That's what the Snap crew said about this new Snapchat.
