Apple apologises for security flaw in Mac OS

To exploit the vulnerability, someone with access to the computer can type "root" and no password in the Users & Groups section of System Preferences.

Against such backdrop, Apple has now apologized and rolled out an update to fix the major security flaw in its Mac operating system (OS) that let anyone log into Mac devices running without a password.

As word of the security vulnerability rippled across Twitter and other social media, a few security researchers found they couldn't replicate the issue, but others captured and posted video demonstrations of the attack, like Wardle's GIF below, and another that shows security researcher Amit Serper logging into logged-out account. Many security researchers said this was a glaring oversight that Apple should have caught, particularly given its reputation for high standards and a reputation (rightfully or not) for better security than PCs. Ergin said staff members reported the vulnerability to Apple on November 23, and he disclosed the flaw publicly in a tweet on Tuesday.

"Regrettably, we stumbled with this release of MacOS". The update is available for download and will be automatically installed on systems running the affected version of macOS High Sierra.

Economy Watch: Retailers Enjoy Solid Black Friday
The amount spent on United Kingdom online retail sites on Black Friday 2017 was up +11.7% to £1.39bn, according to data from IMRG. Moore said he's done some online shopping, but the allure of in-store-only deals drew him out from behind the computer.

"We are working on a software update to address this issue", Apple said in a statement to news outlets. Our customers deserve better. "We are auditing our development processes to help prevent this from happening again", it said.

Prior to the fix, security researchers say typing the word "root" into a Mac's login screen would immediately bypass its security measures and grant root access to the desktop. From there, click on the "Updates" icon in the toolbar, and look for the phrase "Security Update".

The US and German governments issued alerts advising Mac users to install the patch.
