Elizabeth Warren as "Pocahontas" during a White House event Monday honoring Native American code talkers who served in World War II. "He had to throw in a racial slur".

Warren's claims of Native-American heritage originated during her Senate campaign.

"The President certainly (has) an extreme amount of value and respect for these individuals, which is why he spent time. honoring them today", she continued. "As a white person, I think I'm in a better position to know about this stuff".

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Trump's comments at a press conference later in the day, stating the term "Pocahontas" is not a racial slur and the president did not intended it to be used in that way.

Reports state that while Trump was talking to the three veterans, he stood beneath a portrait of controversial president Andrew Jackson - who ordered the forced removal of Native Americans from their ancestral land, causing the death of thousands belonging to the community.

Begaye also said that Trump's language "kind of ruined the whole ceremony" but that Native Americans are "still holding our heads high" and will "continue to outlive any kind of racial remarks".

One voice that has been missing in the debate has been that of the code talkers honored in the ceremony.

Warren herself additionally responded to Trump's dig, telling MSNBC, "It was deeply unfortunate that the President of the United States can not even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without throwing out a racial slur". She needs to work harder on her husband's penchant for name calling including "dummy", "clown", "low-class slob", "loser", "liar", "crooked Hillary", "crazy Bernie", "little Marco", "Pocahontas", and many more disparaging names for his critics.

Trump did actually praise the bravery of the code talkers at the event: "You are special people". Look, Donald Trump does this over and over thinking somehow he's going to shut me up with it.

Trump's comments sparked outrage with many condemning the remarks as racist and insensitive. "It hadn't worked in the past, it is not gonna work in the future".
