Black Friday Background Checks Soar To Record High

Image Nation's Lawmakers To Take Up Gun Control Legislation Debate

The surging numbers come as the US grapples with a rash of deadly mass shootings, the most recent at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, where a gunman opened fire on the congregation, killing 25.

The FBI says it fielded 203,086 background check requests for gun buyers on Black Friday alone.

But what's behind the boost in sales? Cabela's, a specialty retailer for outdoor recreation sports such as hunting and shooting, rolled out 14 days of rifle, handgun, and ammunition deals in an effort to drum up sales.

Figures show that over 200,000 people tried to buy a firearm in the USA on the day the sale hit - the first Friday after Thanksgiving.

However, sales and slashed prices may not be the only thing drawing in firearms customers this year. This is also higher than the 185,345 requests in 2015.

And even though gun sales were down during the first year of the Trump administration, gun sales tend to increase following mass shootings.

Time Magazine to be sold in for $2.8 million
Then earlier this month, the New York Times reported that talks were back on after Charles G. and David H. Media watchdogs have expressed concern over the potential influence of the Koch brothers on Time Inc.

A total of 26 people were killed November 5 when a gunman opened fire on people at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

The review was ordered by Attorney General Jeff Sessions following revelations that a gun rampage at a Texas church which left 26 people dead was committed by a former U.S. airman who had been legally stripped of his right to own weapons.

"People should not be able to make their own assault weapons and other guns when those individuals are unsafe and legally barred from buying guns", Robyn Thomas, executive director of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, told USA Today.

Last week the Department of Justice ordered a review of the background check system to determine whether law enforcement agencies are properly reporting crimes to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A background check on the Texas church shooter, for instance, should have prevented him from being able to purchase a firearm due to his court martial.

USA Today pointed out that background checks do not indicate the number of guns actually sold because a buyer could purchase more than one gun in a check. In the year before that, background check requests for gun purchases totaled 185,345.
