A South African court has increased Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius's jail sentence for killing his girlfriend to 13 years and five months. This comes after prosecutors had argued that the six-year term for murdering was too short.

The South Africa Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the previous sentence was "shockingly lenient to a point where it has the effect of trivializing this serious offense". Pistorius was sentenced to five years for culpable homicide in 2014.

He killed Reeva on Valentine's Day in 2013 after shooting four shots through a bathroom door. Claiming he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder, he was initially convicted of manslaughter.

Prosecutors argued that the six-year term was "shockingly light".

The judge described Pistorius as a "fallen hero" who will never be at peace and sentenced him to six years in prison.

Tania Koen, a spokeswoman for the Steenkamp family, said: "This is an emotional thing for them".

China's trade with North Korea sinks in October after United Nations sanctions
The counter-argument is that Kim will have to agree to return to six-party talks hosted by China, last held in Beijing in 2008. The US designation only made North Korea more committed to retaining its nuclear arsenal, the official said.

The new sentence was backdated to start on the day he began his murder sentence, on July 6 past year.

The Supreme Court said that Pistorius "displays a lack of remorse, and does not appreciate the gravity of his actions".

Attorney Marius du Toit, a legal expert in South Africa, told News 24 he thought the 13 years was "a heavy sentence". "After the trial‚ he tried to make contact‚" Roux said. Investigators nearly immediately presented a different version of events, as neighbors heard a loud quarrel in Pistorius' house and called the police two hours before the tragedy.

Oscar Pistorius reacts in the Pretoria High Court on September 11, 2014, in Pretoria, South Africa. "But, if one looks at what the law states, and given the fact that murder does carry the minimum sentence of 15 years in prison, I think the decision could be vindicated".

Pistorius can appeal the new sentence, according to Kelly Phelps, an adviser to his defense team, but no decision has been made.
