The governor also called for calm among residents, assuring that security had been stepped up in Mubi and its environs and that his government would not rest until those behind the wicked act are brought to book. The blast is said to have been carried out by a teenage suicide bomber, said reports.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicions are likely to fall on the Boko Haram terror group, which often carries out attacks against civilians in the country's north-east.

"It was a (suicide) bomber who mingled with worshippers".

"The bomber was about 17 years old", he added later.

"It was when the prayers were on that he set off his explosives".

Abubakar said that a young boy was responsible for the blast which occurred during the early morning prayer. "We don't suspect anyone specifically but we know those behind such kind of attacks".

Boko Haram's eight-year armed campaign in the region has killed more than 20,000 people and forced up to 2.7 million to flee their homes.

He said since 2010 Amnesty International has been documenting human rights abuses and serious violations of international humanitarian law by Boko Haram that may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
