Explosions reported at cosmetics factory in New Windsor, NY

Firefighters take a break while working at the scene of a factory fire in New Windsor N.Y

Thirty-three people were left injured and one is missing after a series of explosions rocked a NY cosmetics factory.

Fire crews from across Orange County and from neighboring counties responded, along with hazardous materials teams, Green said.

Employees fled the building after the first blast, and firefighters were inside when a second explosion went off, a police spokesman said.

Officials said more than 100 people work at the factory, one of the largest employers in the area. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

Crews battled the blaze into late Monday afternoon. Earlier this year, Verla was cited for nine occupational safety violations, according to records on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's website. They related to exit maintenance and use of flammable liquids, among other things.

"It's still an active fire scene,"Green said, adding that the flames were "knocked down pretty well at this point".

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said state emergency response teams have been sent to the factory. The state also will investigate working conditions and regulatory compliance at the plant. Among the injuries were burns, smoke inhalation, and falls when the explosion happened.

Authorities initially said one employee was killed and up to 35 people, including seven firefighters, were injured when two blasts erupted Monday morning inside the Verla International plant in the town of New Windsor, 55 miles (88 kilometers) north of New York City.

The factory has been operating since 1980 and makes nail polish, perfume, lotions and other products, the paper said. There are almost 400 employees working for the company, but it's unclear how many were on site when the incident occurred.
