Mother of 3-year-old Texas girl arrested, charged with child endangerment

Mother of Dead Richardson Toddler Arrested for Child Endangerment

Sini Mathews turned herself in to Richardson police Thursday afternoon on a child endangerment charge related to the death of 3-year-old Sherin Mathews. Wesley remains jailed on an injury to a child charge.

She is being charged with abandoning or endangering a child.

Sini originally told police she was sleeping when her adopted daughter Sherin disappeared during the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 7.

During an interview with police that day, according to an arrest warrant affidavit, Wesley Mathews told police that he and his wife went out to eat with their biological daughter on October 6, leaving Sherin Mathews at home in the kitchen because she wouldn't drink her milk.

After her body was found, the father's story changed. But in its quest to bring justice to whoever is responsible for the girl's senseless death, Texas law enforcement has uncovered even more troubling events surrounding Sherin's passing.

Sini Mathews' bond has been set for $250,000.

Sini appeared before a family court judge on Monday to attempt to regain custody of her biological daughter, who is expected to be moved at some point out of foster care to live with an extended family member.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office is still in the process of determining what killed the 3-year-old.

Police said Sini Mathews and her husband Wesley Mathews left the child home alone while they went to dinner on October 6, the night before she was reported missing by her foster father.

In a statement, Sini's attorney Mitch Nolte confirmed that he escorted the accused to the police department but didn't comment on the case against her.

4 to 5 a.m.: Police said the Mathews family's maroon Acura was gone at that time and asked people in the area to check surveillance videos for the SUV. He said when he could no longer feel Sherin's pulse he "believed she had died" and removed the body from the house.

Sini Mathews went to a restaurant in North Garland "without being coerced or threatened", according to police.

Sherin's death prompted External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to ask the Indian Embassy in the United States to be actively involved in the case and keep her informed. Mathews had reportedly grown impatient with Sherin for not drinking her milk, according to his arrest affidavit.

Sini Mathews was in court as recently as Monday asking for custody of the couple's child to be returned to her, but that hearing was rescheduled 1 p.m. November 29. As this story is developing, elements may change.
