Airbus Just Outdid Boeing with a Massive Airplane Deal

Airbus lands biggest-ever contract for 430 A320s

Indigo Partners is a private-equity firm based in Phoenix, Arizona, with partial or total ownership of several airlines across America and Europe.

At the 2017 Dubai Airshow, Airbus Group announced its biggest ever commercial-plane deal in its history when it agreed to sell 430 planes to Indigo for $49.5 billion. The third Airbus deal involving 15 Airbus 320neo was announced by AerCap Holdings and Egyptair. His Indigo Partners has stakes in the eastern European carrier Wizz Air, Frontier Airlines in the US, Jetsmart in Chile and Volaris in Mexico.

A320neos list for $108.4 million apiece and A321neos list for $127 million.

Why are the deals so big?

It's managed by William Franke, a pioneer of the airline business featuring cheap tickets and high fees that has spread overseas and is growing in the United States.

According to commentators, the deal marked a dramatic turnaround for Airbus, which had been lagging behind Boeing in the contest for orders so far this year and had a bad start to the 12 -16 November air show. IndiGo and Indigo Partners are separate firms with separate management. Boeing also signed a massive deal, selling $27bn of 737s - of the single-aisle MAX family - to Flydubai in the largest deal of its kind.

Airbus, shares of which rose by 2.4 per cent on Wednesday, said it expects to finalise the transaction directly with the airlines in the coming weeks as it tries to close a 250-plane deficit in its order race with Boeing.

American Airlines in 2011 ordered 460 new planes in a single deal, but that was spread between both Boeing and Airbus.

Emirates now relies exclusively on the Airbus 380 and the Boeing 777 for its flights, making it the largest operator of both.

Tim Clark, President of Emirates which earlier in the month celebrated the delivery of its 100th A380 in Germany, repeated at the airshow Emirates' position that it wants guarantees that the production of the A380 would continue for a decade.
