Star Wars Battlefront 2's Microtransactions are Bad Game Design

EA Now Have The Most Downvoted Reddit Post Of All Time Shannon Grixti

EA has reduced the cost of Star Wars Battlefront 2 unlockable characters by 75%, after an initial response to feedback that left fans fuming. Unlocking a hero is a great accomplishment in the game, something we want players to have fun earning. This means that Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now cost 15,000 credits instead of 60,000; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia will cost 10,000; and finally, Iden will cost 5,000.

Regardless of all the controversy now surrounding the game's microtransaction situation, a Star Wars campaign only comes along every so often, and I'm still looking forward to it. Stay tuned to TL;DR Games to find out what we end up thinking of Star Wars: Battlefront 2. In those outings, you paid for the game up front and it came with all the characters already unlocked. Word quickly spread that it would take around 40 hours of grinding to unlock just one hero if you didn't want to spend any real money on microtransactions to speed up the process.

This representative went on to say that the credit amounts for each hero were based on data from the game's open beta testing period, and that they will "be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding and of course attainable via gameplay".

Most importantly, Electronic Arts today announced that they are reducing the number of credits needed to unlock top characters in the game by 75 percent.

Chrissy Teigen fails at boycotting Twitter's new update
Only five percent of users went above 140 characters during the test, and only 2 percent ever went north of 190 characters. This week, the social media outlet started allowing most users 280 characters for their tweets .

Specifically, Wasilczyk said DICE is aware of the feedback that it takes too long to unlock heroes like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. That starts tomorrow for those who have ordered the Elite Trooper edition, or the end of this week for regular editions of the game.

There will be a Reddit AMA on Wednesday featuring leads from the development team where they will answer questions about the current state of the game. But with so much other upgradable material bought from the same pool of in-game currency - much of it needed just to stay competitive or vary their fighters' gameplay skills - players felt faced with the choice of slogging through hours of multiplayer while saving up paltry credit payouts for heroes, or extending their grind to earn them by an even more unreasonable length. As of this writing, users have downvoted EA's response more than 430,000 times, making it the most downvoted Reddit comment in the site's history.

As of now, it remains to be seen if EA will revert its position after this latest onslaught of criticism, but we'll likely find out more when Star Wars: Battlefront II launches in a few days. If you think this sounds like a ripoff, you're not alone: players hate the economics of Battlefront 2. Well, it looks like EA and DICE might be listening, kind of.
