By Steve Neavling

The 2016 tallies mark an uptick from 2015, when 15 hate crimes were reported statewide.

The FBI's annual hate crime statistics, released Monday, showed there were 6,121 hate crime incidents in 2016, up 4.6 percent from 5,850 in 2015.

The law center and other watchdog groups have blamed the spike in extremist groups and hate speech to the divisive presidential election past year.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which has documented 917 hate groups that are now operating in the United States, believes that Trump has impacted the rise in hate crimes.

Meanwhile, nearly one in five of last year's hate crimes were motivated by prejudices related to sexual orientation, 63 percent of them targeting gay men. However, no link has been proven between the election and the increase.

He won the white vote by a 21 percentage point margin over Clinton, while she captured black voters by an 80 point spread and Hispanic voters by 36 points. One in 6 people were also targeted due to their sexual orientation, the report said. "Earlier this year we've seen the targeting of mosques and Sikh temples, we've seen black churches burned across the country so it all leads to the performance where people are acting out the physical violence against people who are different or not like them". The remaining agencies reported no hate crimes occurred within their jurisdictions. The Anti-Defamation League attributed 34 hate crimes to the election alone.

The latest statistics are based on voluntary reporting from almost 16,000 USA law enforcement agencies.
