Korea Start Drills In Show Of Force Against N. Korea

South Korean warships joined three US aircraft carriers Saturday, November 11, in an unusually strong display of naval force aimed at North Korea, whose nuclear ambitions have been a focus of US President Donald Trump's ongoing tour of Asia.

The USS Ronald Reagan, based in Japan; the USS Theodore Roosevelt, based in San Diego; and the USS Nimitz, based at Naval Base Kitsap at Bremerton, Washington, are all participating in the exercise from Saturday through next Tuesday.

The JCS said in a statement that the exercise was seeking to strengthen and expand the dissuasive strategy to prevent Pyongyang from carrying out further provocations in the form of arms tests.

The governments should also tell North Korea that should it "instead take a step in the right direction", the U.S., South Korea and the rest of the global community are "ready to present a brighter future".

During the joint drill, the two countries will practice air operations, air artillery strikes and aircraft carrier escorts to test their ability to jointly carry out such operations. U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift described the training as a "rare opportunity".

Poll Shows Alabama Race Tied After Allegations Against Roy Moore
Moore explained that he rejects calls for him to recuse himself from the Senate race because he "had nothing to do with this". It's too late for Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore's name to be removed from the ballot, even if he wants to drop out.

The carriers, already operating in the Western Pacific, will sail one by one into the waters east of Korea for the event, it added.

The last time such drills were held was during the Valiant Shield exercises in 2006 and 2007, which took place off the coast of the US territory of Guam, which hosts two USA military bases and is on the North Korean radar for a potential missile strike. The 7th Fleet said that the previous joint exercises involving three carrier strike groups had taken place off the coast of Guam in 2006 and 2007.

The exercises come on the heels of Trump's visits to Seoul and Beijing this week, which were dominated by the question of how to counter Pyongyang's nuclear weapons threat.

It has repeatedly threatened to launch ballistic missiles into the waters around the US territory of Guam.

Trump had also delivered a sharp warning to North Korea in a speech at South Korea's parliament on Wednesday, telling the country: "Do not underestimate us".
