Ex-Trump adviser investigated over alleged plot to kidnap Turkish cleric

The cleric Fethullah Gulen was considered a political enemy to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team of investigators is looking into a pre-election meeting that took place in 2016 between then-Trump campaign adviser Michael Flynn and Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), who has often been described as "Putin's favorite congressman".

Flynn allegedly discussed the plot at a meeting in NY in December 2016, when he was a member of then U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Flynn and his son were to be paid as much as $15 million to deliver Fethullah Gülen to the Turkish government.

If this sounds vaguely familiar, it's because the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year on a meeting Flynn hosted in NY in September 2016, in which participants basically talked about kidnapping Fethullah Gulen, removing him from his home in Pennsylvania, circumventing America's extradition process, and delivering him to Turkey's government, which considers Gulen a unsafe enemy.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian manipulation of the 2016 United States election, has already indicted Trump's former campaign manager and another senior fundraiser on charges including money laundering and a former foreign policy adviser has pleaded guilty to perjury. Flynn has expressed interest in an immunity deal and Mueller, in his dealings with former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, has shown himself ready to negotiate.

TPS and other contentious immigration policy issues are likely to feature prominently in Nielsen's confirmation hearing Wednesday. It authorizes employment and protection from deportation for about 320,000 people from 10 countries.

Flynn did not register with the US Justice Department as a foreign agent until March, a month after he was ousted from the White House following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Russian officials. "All allegations that Turkey would resort to means external to the rule of law for his extradition are utterly false, ludicrous and groundless". Former CIA director James Woolsey earlier told media that Flynn met with Turkish government officials in September 2016 to forcedly send Gulen back to Turkey. The discussions allegedly involved the possibility of transporting Mr. Gulen on a private jet to the Turkish prison island of Imrali, according to one of the people who has spoken to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The meeting was held at New York City's 21 Club. It is not clear if any money changed hands or if any preparatory steps were taken. But by mid-December Trump had named Flynn national security adviser and he was playing a central role in the transition.

The Mueller investigation into the Flynns is part of an overall probe into the Trump campaign's involvement with Russian Federation.

Special counsel Mueller's ability to gather enough evidence to make the charges stick could lead to Flynn making a plea bargain in exchange for cooperation on the Russia-related investigations.
