Consumer Group Calls for Target Toy Recall

A consumer advocacy group announced a fidget spinner sold at Target stores tested positive for high levels of lead.

The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass reportedly tested at 33,000 parts per million for lead.

Lab tests also revealed that the center of the metal version of the same spinner contained 1,300 ppm of lead.

"The two fidget spinners cited in their letter are clearly marked on the package as 'appropriate for customers ages 14 and older, ' and are not marketed to children", Target spokesman Lee Henderson told CBS News.

The federal limit is 100 parts per million (ppm).

CBS News reports that the gadgets are being sold in the toy aisles alongside the spinners sold to 6-year-olds.

Lead has been found in some Fidget Spinners, and it's well above the federal legal limit. Despite the loopholes, the research group sent their lead finding to Target and the company is still not pulling the spinners from their shelves.

Big plays cost Giants in loss to Rams
The Rams will be back at home at the Coliseum for the first time in over a month next week to play the Texans. The teams traded field goals in the final five minutes of the first half and the Rams held a 27-10 lead.

"All fidget spinners have play value as children's toys regardless of age labeling", said U.S. PIRG Education Fund toxics director. So, while one of their fidget spinners may be marketed to "14 and up" kids, it doesn't mean anything if they're being sold alongside LEGO playsets and Barbie dolls.

Lead exposure can be extremely unsafe for children, potentially impacting mental development among other risks.

The popular little toys are already the subject of Consumer Product Safety Commission choking hazard warnings.

"We advise parents to remove the two fidget spinners that we identified from children's use and join us in calling on Target to immediately recall them".

"We can't sit idly by while children play with these toxic toys".

A statement from a senior communications manager for Target, Jenna Reck, said this, "Target is committed to providing high quality and safe products to our guests, and we closely review all product safety claims that are brought to our attention".

"Even small amounts of lead in toys can be ingested when transferred from fingers to mouth or from fingers to food", said national lead expert Helen Binns, MD, pediatrician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
