European Union asks for more details of Apple's tax affairs

Ross helping to shape President Donald Trump's trade policy has a 31 percent stake in Navigator Holdings which the New York Times said earns millions of dollars a year transporting gas for Russian petrochemical firm Sibur

Apple moved the tax home of two Irish subsidiaries to Jersey, a self-governing island in the English Channel between Britain and France, and also made Ireland the tax home of a different European subsidiary.

The German newspaper Sudendeutsch Zeitung gave the New York Times and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists access to the "Paradise Papers", which are secret files that detail alleged corporate strategies of clients of the Appleby Law Firm, based in Bermuda, that specializes in tax shelter schemes.

Apple revamped its business empire to take advantage of tax loopholes on the European island after a crackdown on Ireland's loose rules began in 2013, the documents reveal.

Apple did not reply to an AFP request for comment but has previously gone on record saying it pays all taxes required by law and that the amount is substantial.

On Monday night, a Panorama report on the so-called Paradise Papers claimed that two subsidiaries of Apple were relocated to the Island to keep $252 billion of untaxed cash offshore.

Apple has now released a press release in response to the recent allegations, they have said that they have not paid any less tax as a result of the changes, you can see a statement from the company below.

Walt Disney Held Recent Talks To Buy Most Of 21st Century Fox
So it would definitely be interesting to see how a more-focused-on sports Fox would do, and how investors would react. Disney reveals its latest earnings on Thursday and is expected to be quizzed by analysts about the report.

"Under this arrangement, the MacBook-maker has continued to enjoy ultra-low tax rates on most of its profits and now holds much of its non-US earnings in a $252 billion mountain of cash offshore". The Irish government expanded its tax deductions for companies that move rights to intellectual property, including patents and trademarks, into Ireland.

Apple is one of many U.S. technology companies that have benefited from stashing cash overseas. "We don't depend on tax gimmicks", he went on. "A coordinated legislative effort internationally will remove the current tug of war between countries over tax payments and ensure certainty of law for taxpayers".

Apple said: "When Ireland changed its tax laws in 2015, we complied by changing the residency of our Irish subsidiaries and we informed Ireland, the European Commission and the United States". In fact, our payments to Ireland increased significantly and over the last three years we've paid $1.5 billion in tax there - 7% of all corporate income taxes paid in that country. The taxes it pays to countries around the world are based on that principle.

Congressional Republicans are also seeking to impose a 10 percent tax on some of the profit that USA businesses say is earned offshore - half the rate they are proposing for profit in the United States.

Apple's hunt for a tax haven is a familiar tale, said Reuven Avi-Yonah, director of the global tax program at the University of Michigan Law School, who also reviewed the Appleby documents.
