Papa John's Pulls NFL Ads: Anthem Protests Are Hurting Business

John Schattner

Signifying the moment that the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling around 18 months ago, Schnatter did not cover himself in glory when suggesting that Kaepernick's protest should have been "nipped in the bud" straight away.

Papa John's, according to Bloomberg, "also trimmed its revenue and profit forecasts for the year" during the call.

Papa John's CEO is blaming sluggish pizza sales on NFL player protests during the national anthem.

Shares closed at $62.26, down 9%, partly due to doughy quarterly numbers but also due to the alarms raised by executives about the ongoing angst over player protests, which have been one of the major factors in the league's ratings downturn. "Like many sponsors, we are in contact with the National Football League and once the issue is resolved between the players and the owners, we are optimistic that the NFL's best years are ahead". However, a Business Insider story said that Papa John's reported that same-store sales grew 1 percent in the most recent quarter and that it lowered its North American same-store sales prediction for the year to 1.5 percent, down from 2 percent to 4 percent.

The hospitals getting failing grades and straight As from Leapfrog
The five states with the lowest percentage of A-grade hospitals are Washington, D.C., North Dakota, Delaware, Maryland and NY . "By making the Hospital Safety Grades public, we've galvanized major changes in these states and many communities".

Added CMO Brandon Rhoten: "The NFL was eighth of the top 10 prime time shows". Net income totaled $21.8 million for the three-month period ended September 24, compared with $21.5 million in the same stretch a year earlier. Fans have reacted overwhelmingly negatively to the protests, citing them as the primary factor why they stopped watching the games. Several Papa John's franchises were subpoenaed in New York City (where even the rats know how to find better pizza) for allegedly underpaying their employees.

While Papa John's has apparently started pulling its NFL TV advertising, the league is trying to save the relationship by offering more future spots.

For Q3, system-wide comparable sales were up 1.0% for the North America business and increased 5.3% at global stores.
