Speaking at a news conference in Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, the Queen told the harrowing and heartbreaking stories she heard from Rohingya Muslims.

Italy has pledged 7 million euros to help more than half a million Rohingyas, mainly women and children, who have fled to Bangladesh to escape conflict in Myanmar, Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said.

Negotiations appear to have stalled on repatriating the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh, with the two countries making little headway Tuesday in their second ministerial meeting.

The US expressed concern over recent events in Rakhine State and "the violent, traumatic abuses" Rohingya and other communities have endured.

Al-Shammari commended the great humanitarian role played by Bangladesh through receiving over 580,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, in one of the largest movements of asylum seekers in the world, since 25 August 2017.

"We really hold the military leadership accountable for what's happening in the Rohingya area..."

Washington has worked hard to establish close ties with Myanmar's civilian-led government led by Nobel laureate and former dissident Aung San Suu Kyi in the face of competition from strategic rival China.

The Magnitsky Act, originally passed in 2012, imposed visa bans and asset freezes on Russian officials linked to the 2009 death in prison of Sergei Magnitsky, a 37-year-old Russian whistleblower.
