Trump to announce Iran nuke deal decision 'very shortly'

Nuclear experts said during the campaign that Trump was not trustworthy to command the nation's nuclear arsenal

She however, gave no indication of what the Iran strategy would be.

Trump has threatened to scrap the agreement, calling it the "worst deal ever".

If he chooses not to certify, Trump would be defying the opinion of some of his top advisers, European countries and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Iran has always insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and denies it has aimed to build an atomic bomb.

Second, Trump could call for greater non-nuclear sanctions on Iran as it seeks to punish the regime without violating the deal.

"They came up with a plan that protects the things they are concerned about but doesn't recertify, which the president made clear he was not going to do".

So far Trump has certified the accord but said the next deadline on Sunday is the crucial one. In effect, it would be walking away unilaterally. Sherman said if the deal is renounced, Iran gets to keep all the money and also is freed from the restraints imposed by the agreement. Those in favor of keeping the deal in place argue it's working and will prevent Iran from making nuclear weapons for 15 years.

The agreement contains specific restrictions on Iran's nuclear program that will expire after predetermined periods of time. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., would demand that the intelligence community produce judgments on a wide range of Iranian behavior that is not covered by the nuclear deal, including ballistic missile testing and development and threats to Israel and the Mideast more broadly.

After a meeting in September, Mogherini, who helped broker the 2015 pact, pointed out that all of the countries who signed the deal - including the United States - have found Iran is in compliance with the agreement.

European allies have complained that the White House has not presented a plan on how to push back Iranian influence, particularly in Syria, where the Trump administration has insisted it did not want to get involved in the civil war, preferring to focus exclusively on fighting the Islamic State.

World Cup hosts Russian Federation held by Iran in friendly
The World Cup finals run from June 14 to July 15 in 12 venues spread across 11 cities including Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi. Eight second-placed teams will then fight for four remaining places in Russian Federation via the play-offs next month.

"Let's work with allies to make certain that global inspectors have better access to possible nuclear sites, and we should address the fundamental sunset shortcoming, as our allies have recognized", he said.

Trump faces an October 15 deadline mandated by law to tell Congress if he believes Iran is complying with the nuclear accord and if it advances USA interests.

However, the move is seen as a signal that Trump is willing to impose similar sanctions through his own executive action or pressure Congress into doing so through the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015.

Engel said the U.S. must "live up to our word".

"The decertification is an essential first step to persuading the Europeans that the alternatives to fixing the deal could be President Trump's decision to abandon the deal", said Mark Dubowitz, CEO of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a nonpartisan policy institute.

JCPOA is a "non-binding political agreement".

Two other USA officials, who also requested anonymity, said Trump's bellicose rhetoric on a number of fronts is troubling both many of his own aides and some of America's closest allies, a few of whom have asked US officials privately if Trump's real objective is attacking Iran's nuclear facilities.

As British Ambassador to the U.S. Kim Darroch said on September 25, "We would say, let's intensify the discussions [on how to deal with Iran's other activity], but let's keep the JCPOA".

"At the end of the day, though, everyone recognizes that he's the decider". Many will not even discuss what congressional debate might follow if Trump decertifies, instead focusing the arguments for certification.
