Statement released following Facebook and Instagram crash

Facebook and Instagram remained offline to many users on Wednesday evening in what appeared to be a global connection problem.

Facebook has confirmed it experienced a widespread outage impacting users' ability to access the social network and Instagram across the USA and parts of Europe on Wednesday. Service began returning to users about 12:30 p.m.

Facebook and Instagram users across the world are today experiencing connectivity issues.

As a result, numerous affected users took things to Twitter to express their outrage in comical ways and spread the word with the hashtag #facebookdown.

A Facebook Spokesperson, while confirming the issue on CNET said a networking issue caused breakdown of social network for about an hour on Wednesday. Some users say they can access Facebook on mobile but not desktop.

The outage map on Down Detector's website shows that the issues are not limited to the U.S.

More than 2,500 reports of Instagram downtime were also reported on the service.
