Police, FBI seek public's help in finding motive behind Las Vegas massacre

People run from the Route 91 Harvest country music festival after apparent gun fire was heard

Police said Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire from his room at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino on the crowd of 22,000 attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival, killing 58 people and wounding almost 500 others.

The search comes exactly a week after Paddock gunned down 58 people and injured over 500 from the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel on October 1.

"It's because this individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find the answers to those actions", Lombardo said.

The FBI and Las Vegas police have sorted through more than 1,000 leads and examined Stephen Paddock's politics, finances, any possible terrorist radicalisation and his social behaviour.

McMahill said investigators remained certain Paddock acted alone in the shooting.

Officers also discovered that Paddock unsuccessfully attempted to drill a hole in his doorway, likely to place a camera or fire arm through it.

Paddock shot and wounded a security guard who came to his floor at the Mandalay Bay hotel to investigate an open door down near Paddock's suite, Sheriff Lombardo said, providing new details on what occurred immediately before the mass shooting.

Charles "Sid" Heal, a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's commander and tactical expert, said the new timeline "changes the whole perspective of the shooting".

It was unclear why Paddock stopped firing at the crowd, suggesting he may have initially planned to escape, Sheriff Lombardo said. Paddock instead turned the gun on himself as police stormed his suite.

"If you know something, say something", said Aaron Rouse, agent in charge of the Las Vegas FBI office.

UFC 216 breakdown, betting odds and picks
On a five-fight winning streak in the UFC's most competitive division, he has worked his way to the top to challenge for UFC gold. I think the first round is going to go awful for him, the second round is going to go bad for him, all the way through the fifth.

Paddock also appears to have spent much of September in Las Vegas, where he was seen gambling in the weeks before the attack, according to casino representatives.

After the shooting, police found a piece of paper in Paddock's hotel room which contained a series of numbers that helped him calculate a more precise aim, accounting for the trajectory of shots being fired from that height and the distance between his room and the concert, a federal official said.

This was the surreal existence Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, 64, reportedly described in a court deposition taken four years before he took a cache of weapons and shot his way into infamy from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel.

"This individual purposely hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find the answers", said Sheriff Lombardo, who said he was frustrated with the speed of the investigation. "And then you have the flashing lights", Newton said. "So he had that written down and figured out so he would know where to shoot to hit his targets from there".

"That's been a matter of discussion, whether what I said was accurate or not". A lot of these ports are said to have been in Europe and the Middle East - mostly Spain, Italy, Greece, and the UAE, reported CNN.

His girlfriend, Marilou Danley, told FBI agents Wednesday that she had not seen indications he could become violent, according to a federal official who wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

ISIS had claimed Paddock was one of their "soldiers" who carried out the attack on its behalf after converting to Islam six months ago. Investigators have found 200 incidents of Paddock moving through the city, and at no time was he with anyone else, Lombardo said.

"This guy is a wizard with books", he said, recalling how Paddock used to do the family's tax returns and juice them so they would get back thousands of dollars in refunds.

"Everything that he had, it took him days to finish", Bitsko said.

Authorities recovered 23 guns from Paddock's room, police said.
