United Nations finds 'unimaginable' suffering in Myanmar's Rakhine on visit

Myanmar blames the insurgents for attacks on civilians and for setting most of the fires

Bangladesh and Myanmar officials agreed on Monday to a plan for the repatriation of more than half a million Rohingya Muslim refugees who have fled across the border to Bangladesh.

Global aid groups fear tens of thousands of Rohingya Muslims who remain in northern parts of Rakhine are in urgent need of food, medicine and shelter after over a month of military operations.

Almost 500,000 refugees have crossed the border from Myanmar's Rakhine State since August 25 when a military crackdown was launched following attacks on security forces allegedly by Rohingya militants.

The announcement was confirmed by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and Myanmar official Kyaw Tint Swe.

The UN welcomed the trip but reiterated the need for greater humanitarian access. In a report, United Nations investigators said such violations may have constituted crimes against humanity. Under the agreement [Myanmar Times report], refugees would have the option to return to Rakhine State and will only return "under safe conditions".

The diplomats were also taken to Anaut Pyin village of Rathedaung township, a community of Rohingya Muslims who have not fled, said local police officer Moe Zaw.

An online petition launched on Change.org that calls for the revocation of Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's 1991 Nobel Peace Prize has already accrued 366,000 signatures, PressTV reported.

The station was evacuated amid a "major incident" after gunshots were heard and there is now a large police presence at the scene. Police declined to speculate about the motives of the killer, who attacked passers-by with a knife, according to local reports.

"Myanmar has made a proposal to take back the Rohingya refugees", the minister told reporters.

Turkey has been at the forefront of providing aid to Rohingya refugees, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke on the issue at this year's U.N. General Assembly.

Rohingya migrants in Bangladesh say the fences prevent them from making trips to their homes in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi, who has been severely criticised for her failure to curb the military crackdown, said last month that Myanmar would take back "verified" refugees.

The two sides also agreed on forming a joint panel to oversee repatriation of the recently arrived Rohingya Muslims, who have either been living in squalid camps or out in the open with only a tent on their head.

There was no immediate comment from Suu Kyi's representative.

Bangladesh has proposed a bilateral deal to complete the repatriation process.
