Facebook to Give Russian Ads to Congress

Oblivious Facebook

About 44 percent of the ads were seen before election, while 56 percent were seen afterward, Elliot Schrage, the company's vice president of policy and communications, wrote in a blog post. It's also been said the content of the ads - along with their landing pagers - were blatantly false in many cases. Over the next year the social media platform will be hiring 1,000 additional people to add to the team that reviews and removes ads on the site, the company said Monday. The three committees, as well as Special Counsel Robert Mueller, are all now pursuing inquires on the alleged Russian meddling.

Facebook said last month that the ads appear to have come from accounts associated with a Russian entity called the Internet Research Agency.

The new reviewers are also part of a second announcement last month that Facebook will add more human review to ads after a report showed that people could target ads at users that expressed an interest in anti-Semitic and other hateful topics.

Facebook's decision to give the ads to Congress means the pressure is now on lawmakers to release the ads to the public.

Russian influence during the 2016 election could be a turning point for the USA congress. Democrats wrote to the Federal Election Committee last month with a plea to regulate online political advertising through social media, eyeing potential for misinformation in the 2018 midterm elections. "Potential advertisers will have to confirm the business or organization they represent before they can buy ads". Facebook said it would share information about the ads with the congressional committees that are investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and with Robert Mueller, the Department of Justice special counsel who is also investigating the matter.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez open to future return as Liverpool manager
With two goals and two assists in the first three Premiership games this season, it seeme that Firminho's time had eventually come.

Congress has been pressuring Facebook to reveal details about its advertising system after Mark Zuckerberg admitted to selling $100,000 in ads to a Russian company during the 2016 US presidential election. He also promised a degree of transparency in the proceedings, saying that he hopes to release "a representative sampling" of the ads later in October to help "inoculate the public against future Russian interference in our elections".

Facebook is facing a probe after disclosing the details about the presence of Russian political ads worth $100,000. "That's not what we stand for".

But there is a larger question the company hasn't addressed direction: Has Facebook has taken sufficient care to build policies and systems that are resistant to abuse?

This change, which Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced earlier, is one for which open government advocates have long clamored.

"That's not what we stand for", Zuckerberg said during a Facebook Live video September 21.
