It will be Trump's first visit to the region as president, and it comes as North Korea moves closer to its goal of having a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the U.S.

Washington, Sep 29 (IANS) US President Donald Trump will travel to five Asian countries - Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines - in November to take part in regional summits and discuss the North Korean nuclear threat, the White House announced on Friday.

During his trip from 3 to 14 November, Trump will participate in a series of bilateral, multilateral and cultural engagements.

Trump will also use the trip to further his trade agenda at two major economic gatherings in the region: the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. Trump's presence at the first summit which will be going to held in Manila had been in doubt as he has some differences with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

A war against North Korea "cannot happen" even if "the Korea-U.S. alliance breaks down", said Moon Chung-in, presidential special adviser on foreign affairs and national security, speaking at a panel on how to resolve the Korean Peninsula crisis hosted by the East Asian Future Foundation in Seoul Wednesday.

He has denounced Kim as a "rocket man" on a suicide mission for test launches of ballistic missiles and for nuclear weapon tests. "This is to recognize North Korea essentially as a de facto nuclear state as in the case of India and Pakistan". Kim then blasted Trump as "mentally deranged". The U.S. State Department has estimated that North Korea had more than 1.18 million armed forces personnel in 2014, making it the fourth-largest army in the world after China (2.37 million), India (1.41 million) and the United States (1.43 million). Trump had recently appreciated China for "breaking off all banking relationships with North Korea". "I want to thank President Xi", Trump said at a news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

The South Korean analyst also states North Korea retains about 10 submarine bases.

China and the USA in the past month have increased diplomatic activities as both sides prepare for a reset in their relationship following a reshuffling of the leadership in Beijing in October and Trump's visit the following month.

The former Obama administration defence official also said that warships should be fitted with proper while pointing out that Australia's radar defences were rather sparse.
