Dyson confirms electric vehicle for 2020 launch

James Dyson looking pleased

So far, the company has recruited 400 people to work on the project, including Dyson and auto industry engineers and Dyson has pledged to put over $2.6 billion towards the project - half toward the vehicle itself and half toward the solid state battery technology.

In a letter sent to employees, the company's founder and CEO James Dyson discussed his long-held ambition to reduce toxic emissions from trucks and cars.

"We finally have the opportunity to bring all our technologies together in a single product", Dyson said.

The company will develop the auto at Hullavington, a former Second World War RAF base in Wiltshire, which will open next year, and is now developing the vehicle at its nearby headquarters.

James Dyson says he's committed to investing $2.4 billion in the project.

Soon after, the document was altered to say: "The Government is providing a grant of up to £16m to Dyson to support research and development for battery technology at their site in Malmesbury". The vehicle could be manufactured in either the United Kingdom or Asia.

Saudi Arabia says it will start allowing women to drive
Others argued that allowing women to drive would lead to promiscuity and the collapse of the Saudi family. After years of global attention, Saudi Arabia has reversed its longstanding prohibition on women driving.

No prototype has been built so far but the company believes it'll roll out electric cars in 2020.

"Battery technology is very important to Dyson, electric motors are very important to Dyson, environmental control is very important to us", Dyson, aged 71, said at his company's flagship shop on London's Oxford Street on Tuesday, local time.

That process is already underway - in 2015 Dyson bought the solid state battery company Sakti3, and there are rumours that computer experts from Silicon Valley are also being hired - could self-driving tech and AI play a major role in the Dyson EV? Hopefully, we'll get more information in the next year or two. He was followed last month by Aston's long-serving director of purchasing David Wyer. As odd as it may be to hear that a vacuum cleaner company is working on a vehicle, this announcement didn't necessarily come out of left field.

Half of the allocated funding will be spent on developing the vehicle itself, while the remaining £1bn will be used to create the battery.

It is understood that a designer from Tesla has also been wooed to Dyson.
