Target Promises To Boost Minimum Wage To $15

Target Chairman and CEO Brian Cornell

Minnesota, where Target is based, will increase its minimum wage from $9.50 an hour to $9.65 an hour for large employers on January 1.

The investment will increase pay for Target workers across the US before this year's holiday shopping season heats up and will also apply to seasonal employees.

Target announced Monday that it will be increasing its minimum wage to $11 per hour for all hourly employees in the US with a goal to paying $15 per hour by the end of 2020.

Target says the pay hike will affect thousands of its more than 300,000 workers, but it declined to quantify the percentage of its workforce that makes the minimum.

The wage adjustment won't change the retailer's previous earnings guidance for this year. The current federal minimum wage is set at $7.25 an hour.

On Monday morning, Target Corp. announced it wasn't going to wait for the politicians to figure it out.

Target isn't the only retailer that has increased its minimum wage for employees.

Wentz also got back to scrambling, elusively scampering for a first down in the red zone to help set up a Blount one-yard score. Given that McAdoo will continue calling plays on Sunday, the "drastic" changes he alluded to will have to come from elsewhere.

But how many will follow in Target's $15-an-hour footsteps?

Target's last major wage increase was in 2016, when it moved to a $10 minimum hourly wage in response to a similar move by rival Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The enduring wage gap, which in recent years has been cited as an issue for retailers struggling to grow sales, showed signs of shrinking in the later part of Barack Obama's presidency, thanks to the strengthening economy and some new labor regulations instituted by that administration.

The new $11 an hour rate exceeds every state except MA and Washington, which both have an $11 hourly minimum, as well as the District of Columbia, which is set at $11.50.

Target says this investment will allow it to continue to recruit and retain strong team members to serve customers.

"We've always offered market-competitive wages to our team members", he said.
