Aaron Hernandez had 'severe' CTE, lawyer says

BU Study Shows Extent of CTE in NFL Players

Baez cited study results compiled by the Boston University CTE Center, which examined Hernandez's brain for the neurodegenerative brain disease.

Hernandez, who was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2013 shooting death of Boston semipro football player Odin Lloyd, was found hanged in his MA jail cell this past April.

BU later confirmed the findings for Eyewitness News, saying Hernandez also had early brain atrophy.

Currently, CTE can only be diagnosed post-mortem.

Hernandez's fiancé, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, filed a lawsuit in MA federal court against the Patriots and the NFL on Thursday, claiming the football organizations knew about the risks of CTE.

Lloyds Banking Group Plc (LYG) Facts and Figures
It is positive, as 39 investors sold Hays plc shares while 169 reduced holdings. 24 funds opened positions while 40 raised stakes. Stocks that were winners last year, last month, or even last week, may not be winners next week, next month, or next year.

Jenkins-Hernandez says they "were fully aware of the damage that could be inflicted from repetitive impact injuries and failed to disclose, treat or protect him from the dangers of such damage".

Hernandez is the latest former N.F.L. player to have committed suicide and then been found with C.T.E., or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, joining Dave Duerson, Junior Seau, Andre Waters, Ray Easterling and Jovan Belcher, among others. The disease is believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head, which is why it often affects football players, hockey players and boxers. Stage 4 is the most serious. A spokesman for the Patriots did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A star for the University of Florida when it won the 2008 national title, Hernandez dropped to the fourth round of the NFL draft because of trouble in college that included a failed drug test and a bar fight. In 2011, his second season, Hernandez caught 79 passes for 910 yards and seven touchdowns to help the team reach the Super Bowl, and he was rewarded with a $40 million contract.

He had been accused of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a drive-by shooting in Boston in July 2012, but a jury acquitted him of the double murder.

A judge this year vacated that conviction, because Hernandez had not exhausted all his avenues of appeal by the time he died, a move allowed by a quirk in MA law.
