Mueller casts broad net in requesting extensive records from Trump White House

Special Counsel's Office Interviewed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein

The document requests are the most specific so far about the investigation and show that Mueller is focusing on what Trump has done while he's been president. If he were, Rosenstein may have been forced to recuse himself from Russia-related investigative matters - just as Attorney General Jeff Sessions did earlier this year.

It is not clear exactly when the conversation took place, or how long it lasted, but Rosenstein is relevant to Mueller's investigation because he authored a memorandum in May that the White House initially held up as justification for Comey's firing.

Photo Russia's official news agency photographed President Trump's meeting with Sergey V. Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, in the Oval Office in May.

The allegation of criminality was lobbed at Trump after Comey said that he had been pressured to end the investigation into Flynn.

Rosenstein discussed with Trump his concerns about Comey in May, and promptly wrote a memo outlining the reasons for Comey's firing at Trump's direction, as has been previously reported.

But that narrative was muddled days later when Trump, in a television interview, said he would have fired Comey regardless of the Justice Department's recommendation.

Rosenstein has said he stands by the memo and his assessment that Comey mishandled the Clinton e-mail investigation by publicly announcing the FBI's findings instead of ceding that authority to the Justice Department.

Of particular interest to Mueller's team are records of the meeting Trump had with Russian government officials in the Oval Office on the day after he fired Comey. The New York Times reported that in the meeting Trump had said that firing Comey relieved "great pressure" on him.

Mueller has also asked for all records related to the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer hosted by the president's son, as well as all documents related to the White House's response to the publication of that meeting in July 2017.

Flynn was one of the first of Trump's team to be let since he took office in January.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has made list and wants the White House to check it twice before he makes decisions on who's naughty and nice.
