The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed that the patient tested positive for West Nile before his or her death earlier this month.

IDPH stated in a news release that the IL resident died earlier this month. No further information on the victim was released. IDPH announced the first 2017 West Nile case in the state on July 20. Residents can also use DEET-based repellent and stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Previous year there were 155 human cases, including six deaths. Most people infected with the virus will not show any symptoms. IL is now dealing with 37 West Nile cases. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.

Mosquitoes carry the virus and transmit it through their bite.
