Trump says wants democracy restored in Venezuela soon

Caracas, Sep 19 (Prensa Latina) The Venezuelan press repudiated the speech delivered today by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, at the United Nations, where he attacked sovereign countries.

"Our greatest interest is to defend the Venezuelan people, that their rights be respected, that democracy be restored", said President Temer, adding, "We discussed the need to coordinate (a way) to try to produce a transition that is peaceful, democratic, and that maintains stability".

U.S. President Donald Trump addresses the 72nd United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in NY, U.S., September 19, 2017.

Latin American affairs often take a backseat for Washington during global gatherings, but Trump has made Venezuela's political crisis a priority at the U.N. During his speech, he spent as much time criticizing Venezuela as North Korea, Syria and Iran. Trump also stated that he would not rule out "military action" against Maduro's regime in August, which prompted a denouncement from Venezuela's Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez.

In addition to President Temer, the presidents of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, and Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, as well as the Vice President of Argentina, Gabriela Michetti attended the dinner.

"We are here to discuss the growing crisis in Venezuela", Trump began.

'Vicious' Sanctions Will Only Speed Up Nuclear Program: North Korea
The North conducted its sixth nuclear test on September 3 and was subsequently hit with tough, fresh United Nations sanctions . Trump, in a tweet, asserted that long lines for gas were forming in North Korea , and he said that was "too bad".

"The country is collapsing, their democratic institutions are being destroyed".

"His corrupt regime destroyed a thriving nation by imposing a failed ideology that has produced poverty and despair everywhere it has been tried", he said. "As responsible neighbors and friends in the region, our goal is to help them regain their freedom, recover their country and restore democracy".

Trump could complain about a 20 percent tariff Brazil recently slapped on imports of ethanol over and above 600,000 liters a year, most of which come from the United States.

Trump will take to the podium at the General Assembly just after Brazil's Michel Temer.
