Man Due In Court In 1992 Agawam Rape, Murder

Gary Schara of West Springfield is accused of the kidnapping rape and murder of Lisa Ziegert in 1992

Ziegart's mother is grateful that police remained determined to solve this case.

Authorities announced the arrest of Gary Schara Monday in the 1992 rape and murder of a 24-year-old teacher's aide.

Gary Schara, of West Springfield, Massachusetts, was taken into custody in CT and charged with the abduction, rape and killing of 24-year-old Lisa Ziegert, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni told reporters.

It was not immediately clear why was Schara was in the hospital.

Four days later, she was reportedly found raped and stabbed to death in a wooded area, about four miles from her job.

At a press conference on September 18, DA Gulluni said that DNA proved that Schara was Ziegert's killer.

Assad forces raft across River Euphrates
It said "shock troops" had already captured several villages on the river's eastern banks from IS and were pushing further east. The Syrian government estimates about 70,000 people have survived on erratic air drops of food and supplies during the siege.

Investigators began to look back at persons of interest whose DNA was not on file, he said.

The next day, a tipster provided troopers with information about Schara's involvement in the murder-including hand-written documents in which Schara purportedly admits to abducting, raping, and killing Ziegert.

Ziegert, an aide at Agawam Middle School, was working the night shift alone at the store when she disappeared April 15, 1992. Last year, Gulluni released a computer-generated rendering of a suspect using new technology that analyzed the DNA to predict the suspect's physical characteristics.

Last year, Gulluni said investigators found a single source male DNA from an unknown individual that was developed from various items seized from Zeigert's body and the crime scene. Police then learned he had fled to CT, where they found him after he attempted suicide, Gulluni said. Investigators have not yet revealed a motive for the killing.

"We'll do anything, and sit through anything to have this happen, and to face this person and to say, 'We got you, '" Diane Ziegert said.

Authorities found Schara at a CT medical facility, where he was taken into custody on a fugitive-of-justice charge. "... No matter how long it takes, you can always be brought to justice".
