India Seeks Deportation of Rohingya for Security Reasons

Govt to clarify stand on deportation of Rohingya Muslims in Supreme Court tomorrow

The Centre today told the apex court that the Rohingya Muslims were "illegal" immigrants in the country and that their continuous stay posed "serious national security ramifications".

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said the government's decision to deport Rohingya refugees was in the nation's interest.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, representing the Rohingya at the Supreme Court hearing, said the Indian constitution "provides equal rights and liberty to every person" including non-citizens.

Rijiju said India would even deport all Rohingya refugees, including some 16,500 who have been registered by the United Nations refugee agency as refugees.

Moreover, arrest of Al-Qaeda man in Delhi, who was tasked to recruit Rohingyas for terror activities in India, confirmed that Rohingas are a big threat on internal security.

Kolkata: The Bangladesh government was keeping an eye on the Rohingya refugees and getting them registered to ensure that militants did not enter the country, HT Imam, political adviser to Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, said on Tuesday.

Top cop: London metro station terror incident caused by bomb
The station was closed, as well as an entire section of the District Line , and police urged people to stay away from the area. British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the " cowardly " attack, which she said had "intended to cause significant harm".

The Centre also said the plan to deport Rohingya refugees was a policy decision and the court should desist from interfering in the matter.

Filing its response on the issue of deportation of Myanmar's ethnic minority Muslim community from India, the Centre told the top court that it has intelligence inputs of links between many Rohingya Muslims and Pakistan's ISI and the Islamic State.

A Rohingya insurgent group in Myanmar which claimed responsibility for recent attacks on police posts, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, says it has no links to outside jihadi organizations. Myanmar has never granted them citizenship, even though most can show their families have been in the country for generations.

"We are still allowed to issue (visas on arrival) to diplomats, monks and nuns, but for tourists we have stopped giving arrival visas", she said.

His comments come after Sinhala Buddhist monks staged a rally in Colombo in support of Myanmar's military offensive in the Rakhine state, which has displaced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims.

The hearing will continue next month.
