U2 cancel St Louis gig after peaceful protests turn violent

Authorities closed off several blocks around the police headquarters Sunday afternoon in anticipation of the protests, following two days of nonviolent marches and two nights of violent skirmishes that resulted in more than 40 arrests.

Authorities say four of the nine people arrested overnight during protests in the St. Louis suburb of University City will face felony destruction of property charges.

Police were prepared for a second night of protests after Friday's demonstrations led to several clashes - including rocks thrown at a police auto and objects tossed at officers in riot gear - and culminated when protesters broke a window and spattered red paint on the home of Mayor Lyda Krewson.

"The police of St. Louis informed us that she had not the means of providing a natural protection for our audience, as an event of this size would have required", write the band and Live Nation, the organizer of the tour, in a press release.

"In light of this information, we can not in good conscience risk our fans' safety by proceeding with tonight's concert", the statement read. "As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment". U2's show was due to be held at St. Louis' 70,000-capacity Dome at America's Center, while Ed Sheeran was booked to play at the Scottrade Center tonight, Sunday 17 September.

Stockley insisted he saw Smith holding a gun and felt he was in imminent danger.

So far, eight police officers were seriously injured when a peaceful protest turned ugly.

Owing to a lack of adequate police protection at their performance venue following the city's protests of the Jason Stockley acquittal verdict, the band has chose to cancel this evening's concert.

Prosecutors said Stockley planted a gun in Smith's auto after the shooting.

The protests follow Friday's acquittal of a white former St. Louis police officer in the 2011 killing of a black man following a high-speed chase. As tensions escalated, police in riot gear deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.
