Jones halts Goodell extension talks

Jerry Jones has reportedly 'impeded' Roger Goodell's contract extension talks

But given that Jones reportedly is still upset over Goodell's handling of the Ezekiel Elliott discipline case, the Cowboys owner now is trying his best to prevent that from happening.

Jones has argued persistently for months to the committee that other owners believe Goodell makes "way too much money" and demands a pay cut and a radical change in the formula that compensates the commissioner.

Now, he's running interference on National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell's contract extension negotiations and he's reportedly also taking aim at another high-level National Football League executive.

"If not for Jerry", an ESPN source said this weekend, "this deal would be done".

At the heart of the issue seems to be Jones' belief that Goodell has been overpaid and that he would like to see the current proposal be re-done.

Member of Vote Fraud Panel Wanted to Exclude Democrats
That suggestion generated some tough questioning from commission members, including Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap. The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity has spurred controversy since it was established in May.

The NFL's compensation committee is made up of six people, but the ESPN report labeled Jones the "unofficial seventh member".

Goodell has made more than $200 million since he became commissioner in 2006 and has overseen countless controversies since, ranging from Ray Rice's infamous two-game ban to the Deflategate war to the concussion crisis.

The increasingly edgy relationship between Jones and Goodell has sharpened to the point where Goodell's long-term future as NFL commissioner could come under fire, according to league sources. That enraged Elliott, the Cowboys and the NFLPA and is the crux of their appeal of the suspension in the court system.

"Jerry's not saying, 'Don't hire Roger.' He's saying, 'I hate this [proposed] deal; redo it, '" one source told ESPN.

The next big part of the process will be on Wednesday, when the NFL Compensation Committee has a conference call scheduled to discuss Goodell's extension.
