Equifax Data Breach Exposes Information of Millions

Consumer talking on the telephone

Equifax last week reported a massive data breach, saying hackers may have accessed the personal details, including names and Social Security numbers, of more than 143 million customers from mid-May to July.

"We were notified by the company", Fincke said.

The Equifax breach has generated intense scrutiny of the company and could spark more regulations to protect Americans' personal data, the White House said Monday.

Equifax is offering that protection through its "TrustedIDPremier" program, but if you're not comfortable with that option there are others. It can be a pain because you'll have to unfreeze it every time someone needs to run a credit check on you or if you need a loan.

First things first, head to the Equifax Security 2017 page to make sure you're a victim.

He says, "Everyone is entitled to a free credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies and you're also entitled to a free security freeze".

For another 209,000 consumers, the breach also included actual credit card information. Do you have a credit card? Since the information in your credit file will not be released to anyone, it makes it almost impossible for an identity thief to open a new credit account in your name.

But relations with Baghdad have grown strained in recent years over oil and the disputed areas. Late last month, Kirkuk's provincial council voted to take part in the referendum.

Logging on to Equifaxsecurity2017.com will allow you to check and see if your information may have been compromised.

"Social security number is for life".

The Better Business Bureau recommends checking credit reports, something Campbell says she will probably do. "Equifax's response to date is unacceptable", Becerra said.

"In all of our years investigating data breaches, this may be the most brazen failure to protect consumer data we have ever seen", Maura Healey said in a statement. "You're entitled to a free one".

It's effective only if you freeze your report reports with all 3 agencies.

Going forward, to make a financial decision such as opening a bank account, those under a credit freeze should enact a "temporary thaw" of their credit report.

The Canadian Press made multiple calls as consumers to Equifax Canada's customer service line and was told that consumers whose credit files were not checked outside of Canada are unlikely to be part of any breach. Alerts force credits to verify you're really you before extending credit.
