Sweden holds the largest war games in 20 years

The annual Rapid Trident military exercises taking place in the western Ukrainian city of Yavoriv until September 23 involve an

With NATO officials quoted as saying up to 100,000 troops will be involved in the "Zapad" (which means "West") exercise, it has prompted warnings on social media that Russian Federation "is mobilizing for war on a July 1914 scale".

Thousands of flat-bed wagons have been used over the past few months to transport an army of Russian troops, tanks and other heavy equipment to Belarus, the focal point of the drills, which are slated to last until 20 September.

Russian Federation and Belarus plan to practice amassing troops in a scenario that pits them against terrorists infiltrating their borders from three different countries. Up to 12,700 servicemen (about 7,200 from Belarus, some 5,500 from Russia), up to 70 aircraft and helicopters, up to 680 items of military equipment, including about 250 tanks, up to 200 guns, multiple rocket launchers and mortars, and up to 10 warships take part in the drills. About 10,200 personnel will be deployed in Belarus, with Belarus contributing slightly more than 7,000 people and Russian Federation supplying about 3,000 troops.

But Russia's Deputy Defense Minister, Lt. Gen. Alexander Fomin, has rejected what he described as Western "myths about the so-called Russian threat".

Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis said "we should not succumb to intimidation", describing Zapad as an attempt to make the Baltic states feel insecure.

"Russia is the country that affects security in Europe right now with its actions - the annexation of the Crimea and continued battles in eastern Ukraine - so it is clear that we are watching very closely what Russian Federation is doing", Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces Micael Byden said, as reported by Reuters.

"Atlantic Resolve demonstrates the U.S. commitment to the security of NATO allies on air, land and at sea".

According to the Kremlin, a key component of the exercise is repelling separatists in Western Belarus, who are supported by fictitious countries; however, since Russian Federation is doing just that in Eastern Ukraine, the drill's intention may not be so defensive after all.

Russia, which has the most nuclear warheads in the world, is now working to build up its conventional weapons capabilities to match the U.S., Kofman said.

Poland meanwhile expressed concern that Russian Federation could leave some of the equipment and troops in Belarus.

There is also unease in Kiev, and Ukraine is now conducting its own military exercises.

President Vladimir Putin is intending to observe some of the wargame areas next week.

"We are anxious about this drill.it is an open preparation for war with the West", she told reporters. Part of the drills took place on a patch of land in the Suwalki Gap, which borders the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Belarus, where the Zapad exercise is set to be held, borders Ukraine as well as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia.

Minsk has said the games will role play a conflict with a made-up rebel region backed by neighbouring European nations.
