Republican senator warned Trump about 'affirmation of hate groups'

Donald Trump

Scott, who represents SC, criticized the president's response last month to events that resulted in the death of three people - including one young woman who was hit when a vehicle drove through a crowd of counter-protesters.

Speaking to CBS News after Wednesday's meeting, Scott said the president has "obviously reflected on what he has said [about Charlottesville], on his intentions and the perception of those comments".

"I didn't say I love you because you're black, or I love you because you're white", President Trump said at the rally.

Senate members quickly passed the legislation and the House voted to pass the bill soon after. You have some pretty bad dudes on the other side also, and essentially that's what I said.

In the aftermath of the president's response, the South Carolina Republican was critical of the president, saying "clarity and moral authority" from the man in the Oval Office were necessary, but after Trump's comments laying blame on both groups "that moral authority is compromised".

The White House has not yet released an official comment on whether the president will sign or veto this new measure. "I think that would be-that would be so counterproductive", House Speaker Paul Ryan said at the time, adding that it would "descend this issue into some partisan hack-fest, into some bickering against each other" that would fail to "unify this country".

David Johnson could need wrist surgery, visiting with specialists
Coach Bill O'Brien benched Tom Savage for rookie Deshaun Watson at halftime of Houston's 29-7 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday. Although it's by no means a ideal solution, David Johnson's production in Arizona would have been impossible to replicate.

Scott's staff has worked with White House staff through 2017 on issues facing people of color, such as support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and opportunities for people in poverty. But as we learned last month, the president's immediate and unequivocal condemnation of racist groups is no longer a given.

In an interview with Vice, Scott called Trump's "moral authority" into question over the response to Charlottesville.

Trump "was ever-present during the entire meeting", he said. Trump said he would seriously consider it.

Trump has been criticized for his response following the violent white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville over the city's planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

"Anyone that expects an epiphany or a transformation to happen overnight because somebody walks in a room, I think, you don't understand human nature", Scott said of his discussion with Trump.

Deeply religious, Scott often has said he feels a "calling" to serve in the Senate, and speak out about race relations and what he refers to as the "American family".
