Senate committee to interview Trump Jr. behind closed doors

Donald Trump Jr. was privately interviewed by staff of the Senate's judiciary committee on Thursday. File

He told the Senate committee how he was overwhelmed with his father's marathon campaign, according to the Times.

The eldest son of President Donald Trump arrived on Capitol Hill Thursday morning for a private interview with congressional staff about a meeting he had with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Democrats and Republicans on the Judiciary Committee remain divided on the next steps in the investigation, with Democrats clamoring to bring the younger Mr. Trump in front of the committee for an open, public hearing. In his statement, Junior says that's just his way of talking. The person was not authorized to discuss confidential committee business and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Trump Jr. said he only remembers seven people in the meeting, though eight have been publicly reported. Emails released in July show that Trump Jr. was told the session at Trump Tower in NY was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father, the Republican nominee.

When Goldstone first emailed about the potentially scandalous intel, Trump Jr. said "I love it" if the dirt turned out to be as good as it was billed.

"We want to do this in a thorough way that gets the most information possible", Sen Warner said.

The testimony will take place behind closed doors, but The Post's Karoun Demirjian reports it's expected to be a comprehensive meeting with committee staff and some lawmakers popping in and out. Blumenthal plans to attend.

Secretary Of State To Meet With NI Political Parties
In her response, Sinn Féin's leader in the north Michelle O'Neill said the DUP had previously failed to honour its agreements. She warned there were small windows over the next two months to make progress.

Separately, Susan Rice, who was national security adviser for former President Barack Obama, testified on Tuesday before the House Intelligence Committee, according to a source familiar with the matter.

"I think it will conclude when we conclude that we've uncovered all of the evidence of potential compromises at the Department of Justice", Blumenthal said. Emails show the meeting was described to Trump Jr.as part of a Russian government effort to aid the Trump campaign.

That's why his testimony to Congress could be so crucial to the various federal investigations into Russian Federation meddling in the presidential election and whether the Trump campaign helped.

The California lawmaker adds that he has questions for Facebook, which said Wednesday that hundreds of phony Facebook accounts, likely run from Russian Federation, spent about $100,000 on ads aimed at stirring up divisive issues.

"But nothing came of the Trump Tower meeting, he said, and he was adamant that he never colluded with the Russian government's campaign to disrupt last year's presidential election", the Times said.

"To the extent they had information concerning the fitness, character or qualifications of a presidential candidate, I believed that I should at least hear them out", Trump Jr. said in a prepared statement obtained by The New York Times.

But he provided new details about the June 2016 meeting he held at Trump Tower with a Russian lawyer and several others, while saying he had "no advance knowledge of who would attend".
