Ankara's Collapsing EU Membership Bid: Merkel Critical of Erdogan's Turkey

Chancellor Angela Merkel wants "determined course of action" on whether to end or suspend membership talks.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Turkey should not become a number of the European Union (EU) but declined to close the door for Ankara.

"The European Council meeting in October will also review current relations with Turkey".

Editor's Remarks: Christian Democrat (CDU) leader, and Chancellor, Angela Merkel showed her talent for absorbing political attacks by agreeing with Social Democrat (SPD) opponent Martin Schulz that Turkey should not be admitted into the European Union due to the increasing authoritarianism of the Erdogan regime.

She warned that anything but a united position "would weaken Europe's position dramatically".

Relations have been strained between Ankara and Berlin since the crackdown that followed last year's failed coup in Turkey that has seen more than 50,000 people arrested.

Twelve Germans are in Turkish detention on political charges, four of them holding dual citizenship.

Turkey has been receiving funding from the European Union, which will reach €6 billion by 2018, as part of the deal to halt the migrant flow into Europe, signed in March 2016, Russia Today reported.

Merkel said her government has also asked Estonia, which now holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, not to put any negotiations over an enhanced customs union between the EU and Turkey on the agenda anytime soon.

Mrs Merkel probably went further than she intended after Mr Schulz, her Social Democratic Party (SPD) challenger to be the next chancellor, led the way during a live TV election debate on Sunday.

But after the debate moderators had moved on and asked the two candidates a question about US President Donald Trump, Dr Merkel returned to the Turkey issue, suddenly throwing her weight behind an end to the membership talks.
