Impressive Pablo Carreno Busta reaches first Grand Slam semi-final

Maria Sharapova of Russia pauses after giving up a point to Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia during the fourth round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament Sunday Sept. 3 2017 in New York

Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta has surged into his first Grand Slam semi-final after defeating Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in straight sets at the US Open.

Australian coach and commentator Darren Cahill claimed Pouille "stopped playing" believing his wounded opponent was nearly done before setting up a quarter-final with 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta.

Standing in his way will be either Sam Querrey or Kevin Anderson, with the big servers doing battle during the night session on Day 9.

The Spaniard was ideal against Schwartzman on Tuesday and went on to win the match 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2. "I know that I didn't win matches against top players, top-10 or top-20 players, but I am very happy with my tournament".

"This is incredible, at this stage and playing on one of the most famous courts in the world, it feels absolutely fantastic", said Anderson, who became the first South African player to reach the last four of the US Open since tennis turned professional in 1968. It's something that I always dreamed of but never think I can arrive here.

Momentum swung firmly in Carreno Busta's favour at 3-4 in the second set after the Spaniard fell behind 0-40.

Developing story: Two dead, many trapped as Delhi landfill caves in
The Fire Brigade and National Disaster Response Force teams arrived later and fished out vehicles with the help of cranes. East Delhi MCD mayor Neema Bhagat confirmed that three people have been killed in the incident.

Sevastova, who eliminated Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, tries to get to her first major semi-final, while Stephens - who missed the first half of the year after foot surgery in January - made it that far at the 2013 Australian Open.

In the tie-breaker, Stephens took four of the last five points, three on Sevastova errors before hitting a down-the-line backhand victor to win in two hours 28 minutes. She hasn't reached three Slam finals in a year since 2002.

Schartzman, at 5ft 7in (1.70m), was the shortest Slam quarter-finalist since same-height Peruvian Jaime Yzaga at the 1994 US Open.

Four American women, also including Madison Keys and CoCo Vanderweghe, have reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002 and they could produce the first all-US semi-finals in NY since 1981.

"I hope maybe they can understand tennis is for everyone".
