Statewide Labor Day Weekend DWI crackdown announced

Cops will be out in droves with DWI checkpoints over Labor Day weekend

New York State Police and local law enforcement will be out in force over Labor Day weekend as part of a national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" DWI campaign.

Many of you may be starting your Labor Day travels this afternoon and Michigan State Police are reminding you to drive carefully this weekend.

There were 51 DUI arrests and 283 crashes past year during the Labor Day holiday weekend, state police said.

Connecticut State Police troopers have been called to more than 100 crashes including more than a dozen with injuries this holiday weekend. The enforcement period is underway and runs through Monday, September 4, 2017.

Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints during the campaign, along with more troopers on major highways during this detail.

The State Police goal is to maximize DWI enforcement efforts to ensure motorists are not needlessly injured or killed by an intoxicated or drug impaired drivers during this time.

Troopers will join their counterparts from across the country in the worldwide traffic safety initiative, Operation C.A.R.E., which stands for Crash Awareness and Reduction Efforts.

Nationally, one-third of all traffic fatalities involved drivers who were impaired - a blood alcohol concentration of.08 or higher - according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Sheriff's deputies and troopers also will have extra patrols and a checkpoint set up over the weekend. "Drivers continue to break the law by driving impaired, putting thousands of travelers at risk every day".
