Oklahoma soldiers head to Texas for Harvey relief efforts

On Saturday, 500 soldiers left Norman and are heading to help Hurricane Harvey victims.

Multiple convoys from the Arkansas National Guard departed for the areas of Texas impacted by Harvey.

Texas requested the aid under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact - an agreement between all 50 states, two territories and Washington, D.C., to assist one another in times of crisis.

In the coming days, the Oklahoma Army and Air National Guard are deploying more than 1,500 guardsmen. Stephen Wright, a Guard public affairs specialist.

The Guard resources deployed to Houston, according to a release from the Iowa Governor's Office. "We've seen the devastation here in Oklahoma, but flooding is an entirely different animal", Pope said.

Friday, approximately 27 personnel from the 38th Infantry Division Mobile Command Group were sent to Texas.
