Kenyan Schoolgirls Killed in Dormitory Fire

Seven girls killed in Kenya school dormitory fire

"It was not an accident, it was arson", Matiangi said of the blaze on Saturday at Moi Girls School in the capital in which nine girls were killed and 10 injured.

The minister said the school will be closed for two weeks to allow investigators to conduct a probe. Cooper said students sometimes cited violent protests by slum residents or university students that successfully publicised their causes, and sought to emulate them.

"Police have assured us that there are very useful leads in the direction of specific suspects and we will know in due course who these suspects are", said Matiangi, who is also acting interior minister.

"According to them, this Form One student had tried to commit suicide twice".

"She first tried drinking detergent and second, she tried suffocating herself using a pillow".

The police could not verify the girls' claims and opted to remain mum over the suicide claims and the the ongoing investigations by extension.

Similar fires, said to be related to staff positions that can often bring financial rewards, were reported at schools in the coastal city of Mombasa and the western city of Kisumu.

Rohingya boats reportedly capsize in Teknaf, 4 bodies recovered
Yanghee Lee, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, said the humanitarian situation was deteriorating rapidly.

"There are 10 cubicles in our dormitory, each taking eight to 10 students". I slept in the one adjacent to where the fire started. It was not clear how many fires were deliberate.

"We have to get to the bottom of this matter", Matiangi said.

A sombre mood, whispered conversations and faces that tell a story of pain, confusion and unanswered questions greet you as you enter Moi Girls School, Nairobi.

"Most of the students could not even see where they were going because of the smoke and the fact that there were no lights".

One of the students said the dormitory will always hold bad memories for her.

Several students shared this narrative, but the Nation could not authenticate it independently.
