UK's Theresa May doubles down on plan to run for 2022 elections

Appearing at a press conference in Tokyo today, Mrs May said: 'The close co-operation between our two countries is particularly important at this critical juncture, with North Korean provocation presenting an unprecedented threat to worldwide security'.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is in Tokyo this week, actively attempting to assuage fears that Japanese business leaders have on the possible impact of Brexit on their United Kingdom businesses.

'I am determined that our defence and security co-operation will continue to go from strength to strength, enhancing our collective response to threats to the worldwide order and to global peace and security, through increased co-operation on defence, cyber security, and counter-terrorism.

May pointed to the key role China plays as the North's chief ally.

"China does have a particular position in this, they have leverage on North Korea and I believe we should be encouraging China to exercise that leverage to do what we all want - which is to ensure that North Korea is not conducting these illegal acts".

Theresa May today ordered a British warship to join military exercises with the Japanese in North Korea's backyard as the two countries vowed to take on Kim Jong Un.

She and Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera met on the Izumo at a naval base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo.

North Korea featured heavily in the talks after it launched a ballistic missile on Tuesday that passed over Japanese territory, prompting global condemnation.

Vice President speaks outside Rockport church devastated by Harvey
The vice president was joined by several Cabinet members and shook hands and greeted people outside the storm-damaged church. Speaking with Governor Greg Abbott , Pence indicated he had spoken to the president earlier that day.

Mr Abe said the two leaders had been briefed by top security officials on the threat posed by North Korea and the wider security situation in the Pacific.

Asked if she wanted to fight the next election, Mrs May said: "Yes".

"We need to get the Brexit deal right, deliver the right deal for the people of the UK", Ms May told Sky News.

Apart from security, May's trip has focused on trade and investment.

Abe told the gathering that May had assured him Britain's negotiations on leaving the European Union would be transparent.

"I said I wasn't a quitter, and there's a long-term job to do".

"I am determined that we will seize the opportunity to become an ever more outward-looking global Britain, deepening our trade relations with old friends and new allies".

Japan's preference for free trade may work in May's favor as the prime minister seeks to strike a U.K. -Japan trade deal some time in the future, after Britain officially leaves the European Union in 2019.
