Denis Shapovalov's US Open adventure ends with fourth round defeat

ATP World Tour

That showed against the more experienced, more poised Carreno Busta. He stayed very tough mentally in the big points. This is the first time that the Spaniard has reached the final eighth at the US Open.

Shapovalov was dominated in tie-breakers to ruin his bid of becoming the youngest Slam quarter-finalist since Michael Chang at the 1990 French Open and first US Open qualifier in the last eight since Gilles Muller in 2008.

Denis Shapovalov saw his hopes of reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open clinically ended on the Arthur Ashe Court.

"The biggest lesson is that I'm able to compete with these guys but I still think I have a lot of work to do and a lot of things to learn", he added.

The impact Shapovalov has made was demonstrated by the fact this was his third match in a row in Arthur Ashe Stadium, a privilege usually reserved for slam champions rather than teenage qualifiers.

This is the third time in four matches this year that Sharapova has gone three sets. He began in the US Open proper against Daniil Medvedev, a fellow Next Gen contender. Serving at 1-2, 30-all, he committed back-to-back forehand unforced errors to hand the early break to the Spaniard. This was followed by a clash with 8th seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga. It really has a special place in my heart, and, you know, now NY for sure, it will always have a special place for me. Shapovalov, on the other hand, continued to struggle and errors continued to cost him. The forehand that has already gained him fans across the tennis world was misfiring, and he dropped the first set.

Vice President speaks outside Rockport church devastated by Harvey
The vice president was joined by several Cabinet members and shook hands and greeted people outside the storm-damaged church. Speaking with Governor Greg Abbott , Pence indicated he had spoken to the president earlier that day.

First set the Canadian took a 5-2 lead and was broken serving for the set at 5-3.

It has been a remarkably quick rise for Shapovalov. Edmund looked to be suffering physically, and this was confirmed when he withdrew after one game in the fourth.

Carreno Busta has never played either man before.

While, for all players not remaining in the Flushing Meadows draw, Grand Slams are over for 2017 there are some significant tournaments remaining to be played this season. Shapovalov sent a forehand long on the second to fall behind two sets to love. However, Carreno Busta broke back in the fifth game, Shapovalov double-faulting on break point, and the set went to a third tie-break. Norrie gave his best but could do little to trouble Carreno Busta who won 6-2 6-4 6-3. He had a third look after a net cord went his way, but could not handle Carreno Busta's serve. The Frenchman had upset 20th seed Albert Ramos Vinolas in the second round, but never looked in danger of beating Carreno Busta. In the first 4th-round match that was played in men's singles #The Canadian lost to Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets 7-6, 7-6, 7-6.

How do they match up?

"I mean, it's tennis", he said. He launches into nearly every shot and is already a terrific shot maker. Carreno Busta is in many ways the opposite to Shapovalov. Having held for 6-6 with three successive service winners, he then played a superb tie-break, winning it 7-2 after repeatedly putting Shapovalov under pressure. There are at least many positives the Canadian should take from this moving onwards. Shapovalov will have to be wary of the Spaniard taking those backhands down the line, as there are few players who hit that shot more effectively. Carreno Busta, in contrast, chose his moments when to attack, though his heavy ball-striking regularly drove Shapovalov back. But it will be Carreno Busta in the 2017 quarterfinals.
