County game suspended after arrow fired into The Oval

"No arrests. We retain an open mind as to motive".

A statement from Surrey Cricket Club said there were no injuries.

Play has been suspended in the County Championship clash between Surrey and Middlesex after a "projectile" was sacked into the ground, in Kennington, south London, from outside, according to the competition's official Twitter feed.

Meanwhile, spectators in the stands were told to seek cover or to head indoors by ground security.

People tweeted there were armed police at the scene.

A spokesman for Surrey said: "We were about to bowl the next ball and the arrow appeared two pitches to the side of the pitch we're playing on at the moment". The police arrived very swiftly and the umpires did a very good job in removing the players from the pitch very, very quickly.

Watt said he's been moved by watching everyone that has helped out in the crisis so far and is looking forward to pitching in. Those who have purchased tickets to the game can get a refund; if not, the money will still go to the relief fund.

"We do not know if it was sacked deliberately or if it just landed on our green space".

After the arrow was spotted umpires urged players to leave the field, while Met Police says the ground was evacuated. "They were definite it was from outside the stand".

Mr Lawrence said he thought it looked "like a crossbow arrow", and that nobody was sure where it had come from. "It could have done damage to everybody, it's by the good grace it hasn't".

The Division One encounter - which was meandering towards a stalemate in the final session, with Middlesex holding a 181-run lead with three second-innings wickets in hand - was officially called off at 5.05pm BST, 45 minutes after the incident occurred.

Batty, who was fielding some 25 yards from where the bolt landed, said: "It was a pretty tasty arrow with a proper metal end". John Simpson was 88 not out and former England batsman Nick Compton unbeaten on 28.
