Two million Muslims begin Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca

1.4m Haj pilgrims arrive in Saudi Arabia so far

Dammam- Over 1,400 Qatari pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia through Salwa crossing to attend the pilgrimage, after Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz ordered the opening of the crossing at his personal expense.

The kingdom has received credit for its management of the massive crowds that descend upon Mecca each year — and blame when things go wrong at the hajj.

About 8,000 Saudi boy scouts are volunteering to serve the pilgrims providing them with direction and guidance.

The authorities however noted that they have taken serious steps, including fine and jail terms against violators to ensure smooth Hajj operation for the pilgrims.

- Tens of thousands of air-conditioned tents have been set up in Mina, between Mount Arafat and Mecca, to house pilgrims.

"Saudi authorities have also decreed that pilgrims can perform the Stoning of the Devil ritual anytime between sunrise and sunset".

Houston flood: Addicks dam begins overspill
A major dam outside Houston has begun spilling over as Storm Harvey pushes the reservoir past capacity, Texas officials say . Army Corps of Engineers early Monday began releasing water from two overfilled reservoirs in west Houston .

Saudi Arabia ably handles the yearly task of welcoming a sudden population increase that is larger than most cities, providing the best available health care and medical services to pilgrims who make this holy journey each year. "Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), I am going to Makkah, Alhamdulillah I am going to Hajj", she said.

Muhammad, however, did not disclose the names of the deceased, saying that the commission would first reach out to the families of the deceased before revealing their identity to the public. A stampede in 2015 left more than 2,400 pilgrims dead.

In previous years, one pilgrim cycled his way to the Hajj from the Xinjiang region of China and two others pedalled from South Africa, covering 11,000 kilometres.

During the Hajj, Muslims walk around it seven times anti-clockwise.

This year sees the return of pilgrims from Shia Iran, regional rival to Sunni powerhouse Saudi Arabia, and comes with the Gulf mired in political crisis and Islamic State group jihadists squeezed in Iraq and Syria.

Dammam and al-Ihsa airport have also been equipped to receive the pilgrims where government committees have been deployed to facilitate their religious duties.
