1200 dead, millions homeless due to flooding in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh

Displaced by the floods a woman and her child walk along a road in southern Nepal

Some people were forced to abandon their submerged cars to walk home through flooded streets.

More than 1,200 people have died across south Asia, including two toddlers in India, as torrential monsoon rains struck the region bringing with it nearly a month's worth of rain in a day.

"This is the severest flooding in a number of years", Francis Markus, a spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies now working in Nepal, told The New York Times.

The torrential downpour in Mumbai on Tuesday follows a series of floods which has affected around 16 million people across South Asia in the monsoon of 2017, aid workers have said.

But recovery is likely to be prolonged due to the damage done to the farming industry, which will result in a loss of jobs in an area of India where employment is already scarce. He promised assistance to the flood-hit areas and urged the insurance companies to conduct their assessment soon so that farmers could be relieved of crop losses.

"Right now the focus is not on rescue", Marek says.

Catastrophic flooding in 2005 killed more than 500 people in Mumbai, and a lot of them had been living in shantytown slums. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said floods have impacted over 7.4 million people in Bangladesh, where over 697,000 homes have been demolished.

Worldwide aid agencies said thousands of villages have been cut off by flooding with people being deprived of food and clean water for days. Many of those homes have been destroyed and people are living under tarps as disease spreads.
