Olympic runner found dead in Scottsdale condo complex swimming pool

AMERICAN MIDDLE-DISTANCE runner David Torrence, who competed for Peru at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been found dead in Arizona at the age of 31.

Police are investigating the death, but have said that at this early stage there are no obvious signs of foul play, and that the local coroner would establish the cause of death. Torrence, whose mother was born in Peru, ran the 5000 meters and qualified for the final, placing 15th.

Update (7:50 p.m.): Hoka NAZ Elite confirms the death of Torrence, per the professional running group's Twitter account.

The organisers of next week's Hoka One One Long Island Mile, a race Torrence won in 2015 and 2016, have said they will rename it in his honour.

"No one was more dedicated to their running", wrote Nick Willis, who won bronze in the 1500m at the Rio Games.

Police in Scottsdale, Ariz., where Torrence had been training the past few weeks, are treating his death as a drowning.

He also won silver medals in a United States of America vest at the 2014 World Relay Championships and 2015 Pan American Games. Also in 2014, Torrence helped the US win a silver medal and set a USA record in the 4x1,500-meter at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas.

Torrence finished in 15th and last place in the final of the 5,000 meters in Rio past year, around 40 seconds behind British victor Mo Farah.

Torrence began his career competing for the USA, and held the national record for the indoor 1000m, which he set in 2014 and still stands.

He was involved in the investigation into Somalian coach Jama Aden, who was arrested by Spanish police previous year as part of a probe into doping.
