ACLU taking Trump to court over transgender military ban

A Group Of Trans Military Members & Vets Walked The MTV VMAs Red Carpet

They argue that ban violates the equal protection, due process and free speech guarantees of the Constitution. Trump has defended the ban with a flimsy claim that the costs associated with healthcare for transgender individuals are too high for the military to cover.

"Gender Justice League has been fighting on behalf of transgender people for the dignity that all people deserve", said Danni Askini, executive director of the Seattle-based gender, sexuality and human-rights organization.

The memo also maintains the military's ban on accessions, which impacts both those seeking to join the armed services as well as those seeking to move from enlisted to officer positions. Upon the announcement, the White House official who spoke to reporters declined to comment on whether or current troops could remain under the new policy.

The directive not only bans transgender individuals from serving in the military, but it also gives Defense Secretary Jim Mattis the ability to kick out transgender soldiers now serving, and it directs the military to halt paying for gender confirmation surgery.

The short incorporates duplicates of the President's tweets on the issue, including one on July 26 where he expressed: "Our military must be centered around unequivocal and overpowering triumph and can't be troubled with the big restorative expenses and disturbance that transgender in the military would involve". "Allowing men and women who are transgender to serve openly and providing them with necessary health care does nothing to harm military readiness or unit cohesion", said Josh Block, senior staff attorney with the ACLU's LGBT & HIV Project, in the press release.

Several LGBT and civil rights groups promised legal action when Trump announced the ban in a tweet last month.

New Delhi was concerned that China blocking this corridor would have isolated parts of India from the rest of the country. The latest standoff began in mid-June after Chinese troops started building a road on Doklam plateau.

RAND estimated the number of transgender individuals now serving in the military to be between 1,320 and 6,630, out of 1.3 million total service members.

Two weeks after Mr Trump initially announced the ban, GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders (GLAD) and the National Centre for Lesbian Rights sued in Washington, DC, on behalf of five transgender service members with almost 60 years of combined military service.

Trump has inflamed US cultural wars since his election victory, pushing back on his predecessor's liberal polices and pleasing his conservative base. Like the ACLU, their complaint names Trump and Mattis, as well as the Department of Defense. Studies and advocates place the number of trans people now serving in the armed forces between 1,300 and 11,000.

His announcement came as a shock to nearly everyone, including members of Congress, military experts, and the Secretary of Defense.

The ACLU included screen shots of the tweets in the complaint, saying they were were a "purely political" attempt to accommodate the most conservative legislators who support the president. A Defense Department spokesman echoed that position at a briefing with reporters. One lawsuit had been filed in the name of a handful of transgender troops even before the memo was issued.
